Wye Oak: Civilian

I made this illustration in February 2012 when I first heard Civilian, the incredible third album of Baltimore’s Wye Oak. I’m posting it again to celebrate they are reissuing it in vinyl for all our pleasure. A great excuse to revisit it and see how well it is aging.

I love the ambients it creates and how they use everything from reverbs to textures to set their narrative. Quiet-loud-quiet, distorsion and melody work together to create amazing soundscapes that are the background against which the album creates its immersive reality. When it’s over you have the feeling you are back from an amazing adventure. Undoubtedly a sign of a great record.

Check it out if you don’t know it.
