The Broadsheet is an annual poetry publication of the Kilkenny Arts Office. I took over its design in 2008.
This is the 2020 issue edited by Colm Keegan.

I always try to bring it to life by visually capturing some of the common threads in the poems, playing with visual metaphors
in the same way the published poets do.

I normally work digitally, but for this year's broadsheet, I decided to paint traditionally the illustrations.
The mood of the poems strongly suggested it.

The first few years I worked in the Broadsheet, I designed quite complex booklets that would eventually unfold onto their full size. Around 2010, the financial recession hit the budgets and we had to work much simpler. Eventually, from 2016 on, I found a format that, within budget, would allow for the space to create a visual theme that would resonate with and enhance the poems.
